Sam and the emotion of sharing

Many Neurodivergent people feel unease after sharing personal stories because our need for security has not always been met when doing so. Sharing ourselves is an act of love and authenticity, and asking the universe to take care of it brings us the same love that we give.

Litha is outside the school when she sees Sam come out.

—Hello, my love. Today I came for you at school. Your brother fell in sports class and they are going to get an X-ray. They asked me to come for you. Do you want us to go to your house to wait for them or would you like to come with me to the community?

—Whatever —says Sam without enthusiasm.

—Oh, Sam, I notice discouragement. Would you like to tell me?

—Not now —he replies.

—Ok, I understand. Let's go eat at my house then. Is it okay if I help you carry your backpack and you carry your lunchbox? —asks Litha.

Sam nods and hands Litha his backpack. They take each other's hands and set off.

—Sam, I would like to be considerate of what you need right now to process what happened. Would you like me to give you time in silence, or for me to tell you something, or would you like to listen to music or sing? —Litha probes.

—I think I'd like to go in silence —Sam replies.

—Gladly, my love… I'm here with you in silence —Litha finishes.

They arrive at Litha's house and she serves him hot food, knowing that for Sam, eating calmly is very important for processing. Once they finish eating in silence, Litha offers to go for a silent walk in the forest.

—I think I prefer to sleep a little, Litha —says Sam.

—Of course, Sam. Make yourself comfortable —Litha replies.

Sam lies down on the armchair where there's a little sun and Pancy comes to cuddle next to Sam.

While they rest, Litha prepares apple cinnamon pancakes, and the oven's little bell, when the baking time is over, wakes Sam.

The smell is so pleasant that Sam craves a pancake. Litha serves them some warm milk and, while they dip, a large piece of pancake falls into Litha's cup and the milk splashes everywhere, even her face. They start to laugh at the unexpected, and the laughter changed everything. Sam's mood had changed and now he had the internal capacity to talk.

—I want to tell you what happened to me, Litha.

—I'm all ears, dear —says Litha.

—Today was presentation day and I wanted to talk about bulldogs because I had Coco and I love dogs and I know a lot about them and…

Sam tells Litha in detail everything he had prepared and every detail of what had happened in his presentation, and how he was so excited that everyone was interested and laughed at his jokes and wanted to know more about the stories, like the time Coco's drool fell on the cake…

Litha listens attentively to every word without interrupting, and then she notices that the tone of Sam's voice changes when he starts to say:

—I was so excited that I started to tell about the time we went to the mountain and Coco fell into the ditch and ran all through the ditch until he found a way to climb up and came running to me and we hugged when we found each other…

Sam fell silent, pausing, and then said:

—I didn't want to tell that story. I don't know why I told it, but that story was special and I hadn't thought of telling it like that.

Litha senses that this is the situation affecting him and intervenes with empathy:

—Oh, dear, did you share the story out of the emotion of the moment without the care with which you treasure it?

—Yes —says Sam with certainty and strength.

—Does telling that special story make you sad?

—Yes, that story was special and now at any moment someone is going to tell it carelessly, as I did, carelessly, without realizing it.

—Oh, Sam, I hear that you would have liked to have been careful when telling that story, is that right?

—Yes, I want to be more careful, but I don't know how, if I don't even know why I told it.

—I hear that you were so excited to talk about bulldogs and the others were interested, that for a moment you lost control over choosing what you wanted to tell and what you didn't.

—Yes, yes, I told it without thinking.

—I imagine that you would like to be able to decide when you tell something and when you don't, and at the same time I know that it's very human to be so, so, so happy and excited that one can't control what they say… Do you want me to tell you what I do when that happens to me?

—Does that happen to you too, Litha? Do you also tell things you didn't want to and then feel sad?

Litha smiles and replies:

—Yes, it also happens to me that I tell things that weren't planned and I get sad for a moment, then I remember the magic of the universe. Shall I tell you what I do to activate that magic? If you want, we can do it together.

Sam jumps on the chair, with eyes full of curiosity and excitement.

Litha takes a couple of small papers and pens and puts them on the table, then says:

—First I light a candle and sit calmly in front of it. I put my hands on my heart, breathe a couple of times in silence to connect with my heart and start by saying: «Thank you for the opportunity to have felt so happy, so excited,» because that is something to be happy and grateful for, right?

Sam nods with her head.

—Then I say: «I recognize that so much emotion got me out of control. I am a human being and I cannot always control everything. That's how it happens sometimes, but the love of the universe always takes care of me, and today I want to ask it to take care of the following.».

Now I write on a small paper what I want to take care of, for example: «I put on this paper with care and affection the story of the ditch so that if someone repeats it, it is full of light and love as I treasure it in my heart.».

—You can also take a small paper and put whatever you want on it, Sam —says Litha.

—I think that I'm going to write the same thing, but I'm going to add some extra drawings —comments Sam.

—Ok, when it's ready you give it to me so that I can set it on fire carefully, okay?

—Are we going to burn it? —asks Sam with surprise.

—Yes —replies Litha—. It is so that it transforms into ash and thus we can blow it so that the wind carries away that task.

The explanation gives clarity to Sam and hands him the slip of paper. Litha places it over the candle flame and then on a marble plate so that it finishes burning.

Sam and Litha go out to the garden with the ashes on the plates. Litha continues:

—Now I say: «Dear Air, please carry this wish of love and connection to every place where this story is told» —and blows the ashes.

Sam follows Litha saying:

—«Dear Air, may every time they tell the stories of the ditch be with love and care» —and blows the ashes.

After a few minutes, Litha says:

—How do you feel now, Sam?

Sam sighs and smiles.

Litha hugs him for a moment when suddenly, the doorbell rings.

It was Dani and Gabi along with Sam's brother, who had his right wrist in a cast and his leg bandaged. Everyone comes in to eat apple pound cake while they recount the adventure of the broken wrist and the presentation of the bulldog topic.

In the middle of the story, Sam pauses and turns to look at Litha. In complicity, Litha smiles at him and Sam tells about the magic he made with Litha to take care when we have shared too much. He tells his family that now every time it happens to him he knows that everything will be alright because the love of the universe always takes care of him. Everyone smiles and dips pound cake in hot milk celebrating being all together after a day with so many emotions.

Sharing what moves us in a safe space changes the way we experience it, and magic helps us reconnect with divine trust.

What do you do to take care of your heart when things happen that are not as careful as you would like?
